Pankaj Mishra has an Op-Ed on the myth of the Indian boom in the NY Times. This quote leaves me breathless:
In the countryside, where 70 percent of India's population lives, the government has reported that about 100,000 farmers committed suicide between 1993 and 2003.
Anybody heard about this genocide before? Absurd and horrid.

ah si, la revolución verde y la liberalización economica al punto de perfección, no? hay muchos articulos sobre este injusto en varios periodicos en la red por ejemplo: indiatogether.org, flonnet.com, y tambien por el bbc. si, es una tragedia muy grave y que dura mucho tiempo.
yup, i've heard of it. its happening precisely b/c of the new economic policies adopted by india in the early 90's - liberalization, privatization, etc. opportunities for farming are decreasing at a rapid pace and often replaced by 'terminator' type crops that produce seeds that cannot make more plants! a lot of farmers just can't up and move to the cities where 'opportunity' lies, so w/the limited options they have, they do what you read about.
so interesting because I just read that piece today...it was the first I had heard of it too.
